What Sydney Means to Me

Image
Throughout our last few posts, we've discussed what to see and do, but not necessarily a personal connection. Sydney is a global city, who has developed and moved into the future alongside those who both live here and visit. Sydney's culture is broad, both traditionally Australian and able to connect on a broader, global scale. From nights out, to looking for something special for a close friend or current romantic interest; to attending concerts and other events. Sydney has been an integral part of my personal life, and I'm very happy to have posted about a few things to see and do when visiting. It's impossible to cover everything, so my most succinct Sydney Advice is this: see it for yourself, wander around, experience it without just referring to tips, or lists. Obviously, these help sharpen direction and offer a launching point, but don't use them exclusively. Photo by Blake Sydney is an adventure, but also something relatable and familiar. Don't be

A Night in Sydney - Circular Quay

Image
Sydney has some pretty good views, but none of them are quite like the view of Sydney's Circular Quay sitting on the water and watching ferries, boats and cruise liners sail in and out as the sun sets with a glass of champagne in hand. First stop on our harbour side evening was the iconic Opera Bar   for a seat right on the water right under the famous Sydney Opera House. While drinks and food may have seemed a little expensive at first the view quickly begins to make it all pay off as nothing compares to the view of Sydney's harbour during sunset and places like Opera Bar are the perfect place to do it. URL Next stop on our trip around Circular Quay was the lush vista bar Hacienda   which once again features a fantastic view of Sydney's harbour; sitting on level three, this bar rises above the rest and with it's Cuban inspired aesthetic Hacienda feels like a true escape from Sydney's city. The cocktails were try unique and fantastic - inspired by fresh C

Holey Moley: Mini Golf

Image
If you’re looking to wind down on a Sunday afternoon and just have an enjoyable time with your friends, Holey Moley is the place to be! I personally went to the course in Potts Point this past weekend and had a great time. https://www.holeymoley.com.au/ There’s a variation of courses to have a go on and bars dot the venue, so there’s alcohol to fuel the fun if that’s your thing. Despite it being slow moving if you’re stuck behind a larger group, this gives an opportunity to have a sip and have a chat. And the staff were more than friendly (I was even able to snag a free extra round!). Whether you don’t have a competitive bone in your body, or you were born with a golf putt in your hand, it’s impossible not to have fun.   Having multiple locations to go have a putt is also a bonus! Courses can be found in Castle Hill, Newtown and Potts Point, so there's no excuses not to give it a go! - Anthony

Macquarie Centre - Event Cinemas

Image
Macquarie Centre is one of Sydney's, and the countries largest shopping centre. It serves as a major hub, as it serves the shopping and transport needs for the North Sydney. The introduction of the Sydney Metro will only strengthen its importance within the Northern Sydney region. URL Macquarie Centre contains 275 stores, all arranged in a twisting, maze-like staircase. There are a vast array of stores, ranging from international department stores, to small food shops. The centre also contains a range of activities, including one of the few ice skating rinks in Sydney, and a cinema. Event Cinema's is found near the vast array of restaurants that you see upon entry. The cinema contains a large snack bar, and a gold class lounge, where people can have a few drinks prior to their movie. I watched Avengers: Endgame in one of the many showings they have daily for it. The seats were comfortable, however they didn't compare to the higher quality reclining seats found at

Look in a Book

Image
Sydney is a land of many subcultures, and today I'd like to make a post about a few bookstores in the Sydney CBD I'm a huge fan of. First and foremost is Kinokuniya, a behemoth of the Sydney bookstore scene. Kinokuniya has a huge range of subculture books, comics, and manga, in Japanese, English and Chinese! Located right on top of the Town Hall station, in the top floor of the Galleries Victoria, it is easy to get to, and is almost an entire floor of book loving heaven. If you're in Sydney long enough, the staff do orders, too! From art, to architecture, to Japanese Pulp Fiction, Kinokuniya has most everything you could need. Close to Kinokuniya, is Galaxy Books, a Science Fiction bookstore with a very wide range; holding onto many rare or exciting titles! If Kinokuniya doesn't have what you need, Galaxy might, and vice versa! Looking for Secondhand Japanese titles, or Japanese dubs on DVD of popular Western Films? Look no further than Hondarake (full of books) l

Manly Beach

Image
Hey everyone! So, last week I introduced you to the iconic 'Bondi Beach', but this week I'll open your eyes to another Sydney icon: Manly Beach! https://makeagif.com/gif/a-little-bit-of-sunday-at-manly-beach-XgyKno Manly beach is amongst the Northern Beaches of Sydney and was home to the world's FIRST surfing competitions in 1964. So how can you get to this lovely place? It's as easy as hopping on a ferry from Circular Quay which will drop you to the Manly ferry dock in about 30 minutes! Whether you're there for the water or for the view there is plenty to do! Here are a few of my top suggestions (click on the link for more details: 1. Walk the Manly to Spit Walk : 10km scenic coastal walk that should take around 3-4 hours to complete the track. 2. Learn to Surf : I recommend top rated Sydney Surf School for individual or group lessons (all ages). 3. Climb the Grotto Point Lighthouse : Located on a headland near Dobroyd Head you'll find the &#

A Night in Sydney - Newtown

Image
This week I headed to Sydney's inner western suburbs to explore Newtown . Its streets are filled with a thriving alternative culture and population which creates a new view on life in Sydney. Along Newtown's King Street you'll find many different bars and restaurants with a variety of cuisines and url influences. The first stop of our night was The Bank Hotel , which located near the station is often the first stop on a night in Newtown . A bar that never seems to end T he Bank Hotel hosts a few bars within and is good for cheap drinks. Next stop on our list was a small restaurant named Belly Bao which in true Newtown fashion combines Asian street food such as steamed buns and noodles with Hip Hop and cocktails creating a truly unique aesthetic. This was truly a highlight of our night as the food was well priced and the cocktails were unique, mixing yuzu and popping pearls into all kinds of things. Walking into Belly Bao you get a real sense of personali

El Camino Cantina, The Rocks

Image
Sunday the 5th of May is Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican tradition, celebrating the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. Whilst a trip to Mexico was out of the question, the best way to celebrate without leaving Sydney, was to go to El Camino, a popular Mexican bar, located in The Rocks. Source To celebrate the occasion, they had a wide variety of specials including $7.50 margaritas and free corn chips. The margaritas came in six different flavours, the most popular being Classic and Mango. They also had a chilli eating competition, which resulted in many beads of sweat upon the contestants face. The location is perfect, right in the middle of The Rocks. This means its a short stroll from one of the best views in Sydney, looking across the harbour at the Sydney Opera House. It also means you are in a nightlife hotspot within Sydney, within a short walk to many of Sydney's clubs. Being Cinco de Mayo, El Camino Cantina was packed full and was a fun night out for everyone there.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge

Image
The Sydney Harbour Bridge has been a historic landmark for Sydney that looks over the other Sydney icon – the Sydney Opera House.     Not only is this marvel of engineering great to look at, but you can also climb it! https://www.bridgeclimb.com/climbs/the-bridge-climb/ To be able to scale this amazing structure, you will first need to don the required safety gear (including a fashionable jumpsuit and a cap that is yours to keep!) and pass the safety course before beginning the ascent. If you think you will have a problem with the thousands of stairs that you will need to climb in the next few hours, don’t worry - the pain in your legs will disappear as soon as you step out onto the top of the bridge with that breath-taking view. This is a phenomenal experience, as no where else will you be able to stand 134 metres above the Sydney Harbour with a magical 360 degrees view of the cityscape all around you. https://www.bridgeclimb.com/climbs/#types Not only that, but you

A Night in Sydney - Crows Nest

Image
https://www.thefoxtrot.com.au/the-foxtrot-gallery Sydney has many great places to spend your night - this weekend I spent a night in Crows Nest and discovered a cosy little nook on Sydney's North Shore. Starting the night at Small Bar we sat down to shared plates of soft tacos and grilled halloumi paired perfectly with a friendly and warm atmosphere. With fairy lights and vines overhead, it truly felt as if we were sitting in a courtyard a million miles away from the rest of the world. Continuing on with the evening, we left our courtyard dinner behind and entered The Hayberry - a rock n roll bar with character in every brick. Looking around you can see all kinds of paraphernalia as you sit down with your choice of their selection of craft beers, ciders, wines or house cocktails. While rock n roll runs through this bar the staff are accommodating in every way and are more than happy to chat to you about this funny little bar and all it has to offer. Our next move was towar

Bondi Beach

Image
Hey Everyone! After all the nightlife posts, it's only fitting that we share some of the amazing Sydney experiences fit for daytime! Let's start with Bondi Beach. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, it's time to come out from under that rock and experience one of Sydney's most famous destinations! https://giphy.com/explore/bondi-beach Home to the iconic surf club 'Icebergs', Bondi Beach is just 8km from the city centre, with a quick 30-minute bus from Town Hall. With amazing waves from morning to night and the calm swimming pools, it will quickly become one of your favourite summer destinations. But what if you’re not a surfie? Don’t worry there is still plenty to do: §   Visit the Sculptures by the Sea: a public exhibition held since 1997, found on the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk §   Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk: about a 2-hour walk, 6km of beautiful views and beaches (and of course a few cafés) §   The Bond
